WNC 'D' -v- WNC 'E' - 53-27

After a closely fought match against the D’s in the MET league a few weeks ago, where they narrowly beat us 13-11, we were hoping to push them hard again in our Croydon re-match. However, they had a convincing victory 53-27 this time around.

Once again we had another new team line up who hadn’t all played together before, and this certainly told in the first quarter. Despite putting on some good defensive pressure all over the court, we were punished by both of the D’s shooters who didn’t seem to miss a shot from anywhere in the circle! They finished the first quarter up, and maintained this position for the rest of the game.

We made some positional changes for the second quarter which definitely had a positive impact. We drove on to the ball a lot better, meaning we weren’t playing as many risky loopy passes. As the match went on, despite continuing to concede goals, we played as more of a unit, leaving space for each other rather than all crowding together. The D’s deserved their win, with really impressive shooting and good defensive pressure across the court.

In the next few training sessions we will look to particularly focus on positioning for backline passes (as we sometimes struggled getting the ball out of the defensive third), and how we can really take advantage of Miriam’s height advantage in the shooting circle.
There are definitely several positives we can take from this game, and with an unchanged team for the first time going in to Saturday’s match, we will be hoping to claim our first win of the season in either league…
