WNC 'E' -v- Selsdon - 38-25

There may have been a number of shock results in the FA Cup this weekend, but there was no unwelcome surprise for Wandsworth Es in their eagerly awaited clash against Selsdon on Saturday morning. With new signings Emma and Zoe taking to the court like ducks to water, the team took a commanding lead in the first quarter.

A slightly lacklustre second quarter allowed the Croydon-based opponents to claw back some goals, but Wandsworth’s diligence in the remaining two quarters soon put an end to any thoughts of the lead being overturned. Awesome passing and movement in the centre court by Kerry, Kirsty, Alice and Zoe, netball’s answer to Messi, was reminiscent of the tika-taka style of play adopted by the 2010 World Cup winning Spanish national football team, allowing Wandsworth to maintain possession and dominate the match.

Selsdon were worthy opposition with a goal shooter of extraordinary shooting prowess, but it was testament to Erin and Emma’s dynamic defending that this talent was contained. Meanwhile at the goal mouth, Vicky and Gayle were redolent of the strike force of Rooney and Van Persie or the killer partnership of Ronaldo and Benzema. This devastating duo’s strong display at the net, working the circle with panache, was to be applauded.

With a winning streak of two games, Wandsworth Es have answered their critics with aplomb and look forward to maintaining this excellent style of play in their coming matches.
