A really frustrating match for the E’s this weekend, losing to bottom of the table opposition. With us sitting second bottom it was a must win game, but unfortunately with only 6 of our squad available it was always an uphill struggle.
We had the best of the possession in the first two quarters, with some great turnovers from Zoe and Lauren and quick movement through centre court. Unfortunately we were unable to convert our chances and also made a number of silly errors, so were losing at the half way mark. With only 6 players we weren’t able to make any positional changes, although Kerry did a good job playing out of position at GS (and earned POM).
The third quarter was by far the best for us, playing more patiently around the circle, rather than forcing the ball in. We also massively reduced our unforced errors, and good defensive pressure throughout the court meant Wellcome were unable to take advantage of their extra player.
Unfortunately we’d left ourselves with just too much to do, and despite a solid final quarter, the match finished 21-25.
If we’re going to have any chance of staying up this season, we’re going to have to start beating teams we lost to first time round. However, with some excellent new additions to the squad over the past few weeks/months, we might be able to pull off the great escape…
