There are now only a few days left before America votes on its 45th President and, similar to that fight between the Republicans and Democrats, the game between Wandsworth Es and Roundwood D was intense. With similar predicted short turnouts for the Democratic party, the Es weren’t certain of getting the numbers ahead of this head-to- head contest, so were delighted to get a near full team to the start of the match, with a late surge to full numbers. However, with players out of position, the polls/scores were tied with 6 apiece.

With our team reconfigured for the second quarter, the Es began to get their rhythm, pushing ahead with Carole, Lara and Hannah working the circle to attain those important points. Clinton-esque, they showed their dominance against the opposition. Stronger together, they surged to an 8-point lead. Daisy deserves a mention for her ability to match the distance covered by both presidential candidates on their campaign trails as to that she covered on court.

But the opposition rallied in the third quarter and turnovers were fairly equal. However, akin to the punches thrown at a Trump rally, a ball was lobbed at the umpire by the opposition, albeit accidentally, which left the umpire understandably shaken, which refocused the Wandsworth camp so they remained ahead 30-18.

With the final quarter all to play for and election day/final score in sight, Wandsworth focused on the key issues, aiming to shatter that glass ceiling. Katie, Amy and Kirsty kept a tight defence, deflecting any attacks by the opposition. Seeing a weakness in the opposition, Wandsworth pressed ahead, surging to victory with a 43-24 score line.

Though the US presidential election has been a divisive battleground, the Es represent what a strong unified female team can achieve together. Let’s hope for a similar result on November 10th.
