Wandsworth A vs. Chequers A - 35-53 (by Claire)
Claire, Tara, Ellie, Jen, Cara, Laura Mc, Rach, Tabs

POM: Jen
PP: Ellie

Wandsworth A’s took to the court determined to prove ourselves against Chequers A. Due to some unforeseen circumstances (Recover soon Laura!) we only had one circle defender so knew it wasn’t going to be easy - however the sunshine was out and we were all keen to get out there and do our thing!

We started off a little slowly, adjusting to the new team structure and combinations. Tara proved herself as someone who can (literally) play anywhere on the court and stepped into GD, which was no easy task given the GA was pretty much the playmaker in the Chequers attack. We managed to force a few turnovers however a few mistakes on our part throughout the court meant we were down 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter jinx struck us in the second quarter, we just couldn’t find our flow and managed to let Chequers get on a bit of a roll. Having said that we pulled it back in the last 5 minutes and there were periods of great play – Cara and Laura worked tirelessly in the midcourt and were able to get some great feeds into Tabs and Rach in the shooting circle. Second quarter ended 32-15.

With some fresh legs on in the third we found our flow again and some new-found determination meant we had a flying quarter. Jen was doing great at C both attacking and defensively, and Ellie stepped into the GD position where she did a great job of shutting down the Chequers attack. The flow down the court was working well and our shooters were doing a great job putting up the shots – meaning we ended up winning the third quarter! 43-25.

The last quarter we continued to play to our game and, although the game had got away from us due to the the second quarter, we didn’t give up right to the last whistle and drew the last quarter meaning the final score was 53-35. If we are able to play as we did in the second half next time I have no doubt that we can pull out a win. A big well done to Tara and Ellie for playing out of position! And very well deserved to Ellie with players player and Jen with POM.
