Having beaten KCLA Yellow earlier in the season the A’s went into Saturday’s game hoping for another win in the bag with an even bigger goal difference. Punishing winds meant short, sharp passing was a must with overheads being picked off by both teams in the first quarter. KCLA came out strong, hungry for every ball. However, our shooting dream team, Rach and Tabs, held their own in the circle against a gruelling defence with Soph at WA constantly on the circle edge, ready to feed both shooters. The wind causing cautious play from both teams meant a low scoring first half finishing 6-5, Wandsworth in the lead by 1 goal.

The A’s really stepped up their game as we went into the second quarter. Zone defence down the court was extremely strong with Tara at WD picking off balls left, right and centre. Defence in the circle from Claire and Smalls was tight with great communication. Claire had arms up over every shot forcing both KCLA players to shoot from the edge of the circle. Any rebounds were successfully picked off by Wandsworth defence with the half time score finishing 14-9 to Wandsworth.

The third quarter saw KCLA come out with a bang and Wandsworth play became a little complacent. KCLA’s play maker moved from GA to GS and worked the circle with rapid movement. Careful not to send any overheads Wandsworth struggled slightly to bring the ball up the court with the wind continuing to howl. Any loose balls were picked up by the opposition and successfully turned into goals. We ended the third quarter 18-17, back to a one goal lead.

Captain McCambridge gave a stellar team talk before we went into the final quarter and brought vital energy to the mid court at WA offering and re-offering for every ball. Play was complimented by Jen’s wise words reminding the team to ‘stay calm’ as she relentlessly supported both defence and attack. Tabs and Rach continued to sink shots. The rest of the team remained cool and composed and managed to hold onto the win with the final score 30-27.

Shout out to Player’s Player Tabs. A wins and win for Wandsworth A’s holding on to our position as top of the table in CNL!
