This was set to be the toughest match of the season for the D's; 1st round of the Chairman's Cup and we were playing last years winners. However we had a plan, get to the court early, have a good warm up and start all guns blazing, to maximise our 15 goal head start. Unfortunately this was not to be, with 3 members of the squad making a mad dash though Crystal Palace Park to try and make the start of the match and 1 left trying to fine the entrance to the sports centre. We managed to begin the game with a full team and got off to a flying start.. Fran and Daisy worked well together feeding the ball into the D and pressuring the ball when Karisma tried to bring it back up the court. The end of the first quarter saw us in the lead, 22 - 16.
We knew we couldn't let up for even a second with this team. In the second quarter Karisma started to pull away slightly, with their shooters seemingly unable to miss. However down the other end Becky was pulling of some similarly spectacular shots. In centre court we remained patient working the ball around the court finding ways through Karisma's defence. Some brilliant interceptions from Liv made sure we were able to keep the ball in our half for large portions of the quarter. When the whistle went for half time it was neck and neck, 29 - 29.
Karisma were clearly rattled, and seemed unable to believe that they hadn't put the game to bed. They came back on very fired up, becoming far more physical. However no amount of intimidation could put Hannah off, she got in shot after shot. Down the other end of the court Dami was getting tips and rebounds, resulting in us turning over several of Karisma's centres. Their increased intensity saw them finish the quarter slightly ahead, 34 - 39.
Going into the fourth and final quarter it was still all to play for! The whole team dug deep for one final push, some incredible goals and interceptions as well as great passing and movement, working the ball into the D, had the Karisma supporters on the side line looking worried. Unfortunately we couldn't quite claw back a victory and the final score was 40 - 48. A massive well done to the girls, who all raised their game against a really tough team!!
